Who is HYPER for?

Who is HYPER for?

Paul Timofeev

Summary

Learn about the stakeholders who power Expansion and what HYPER means for them.

Use Hyperlane, Own Hyperlane. Build With Hyperlane, Own Hyperlane.

A key principle of Hyperlane is that network participants who generate value for The Open Interoperability Framework can own it too. To reward protocol usage and growth, 19.25% of the total HYPER supply will be distributed through Expansion Rewards - a programmatic system that distributes HYPER ownership to the users and developers who contribute to Hyperlane activity.

Whether you’re a user bridging across chains, a developer taking your app to multiple chains, a new chain onboarding users and developers, a Validator securing crosschain communication, or a staker contributing to economic security by supporting Validators- you help power the Hyperlane network.

Depending on your role in the Hyperlane network, here’s what HYPER means for you.

The Daily Bridger

The curious astronaut exploring Expansion across new ecosystems.

Who you are: You’re a day-to-day user who uses Hyperlane for your bridging needs. Whether its moving between EVM, Solana, or Cosmos chains, you’ve continued to rely on Hyperlane to get you to where you need to be.

What HYPER means for you: If you were among the earliest users helping bootstrap activity on the Hyperlane protocol through its first ~8.6M messages, you're likely eligible to receive retroactive rewards in HYPER through the Expansion Drop.

But your journey doesn’t have to end here: as new chains and ecosystems continue to emerge, new opportunities to receive Expansion Rewards await, simply by using Hyperlane for your bridging needs. Though you can explore Expansion through Nexus, you’ll be eligible for Expansion Rewards by using any bridge or application that runs on Hyperlane.

In fact, you may already be a Hyperlane user without realizing it - if you’ve bridged through apps like Superbridge, Stride, TaoFi, or OpenUSDT, you’ve already used Hyperlane under the hood.

All the applications you can use to bridge and earn Expansion Rewards. Explore Expansion today.

Perhaps you want to try a new game on Eclipse, explore the intersection of AI and crypto in the Bittensor ecosystem, use your OpenUSDT across the Superchain, or bridge to a new sovereign rollup in the Celestia ecosystem. Wherever you need to go - bridge with Hyperlane, and earn Expansion Rewards.

As a frequent Hyperlane user, you may also be eligible to maximize your Expansion rewards through HyperStreaks - a new incentive mechanism that rewards long-term staking. To be eligible for a HyperStreak and earn bonus Expansion Rewards (provided you meet the minimal fee requirements) - simply hold staked HYPER (stHYPER) throughout the first quarter (90 days) after TGE as you continue to bridge with Hyperlane. More details on HypeStreaks are available here.

Whether you were early or you’re just getting started bridging with Hyperlane, HYPER is your reward for contributing to protocol activity over time.

The App Developer

The crafty astronaut, building products and services to power Expansion.

Who you are: You’ve built a product or service that uses the Hyperlane protocol. Whether its bridging tokens, settling intents, or passing data between chains, your application depends on Hyperlane to function - and therefore generates messaging volume for the Hyperlane protocol.

What HYPER means for you: If your app generated messaging volume for Hyperlane in its early days, you’re likely eligible to receive retroactive rewards as part of the Expansion Drop. But the real opportunity lies ahead: as your app continues to generate activity for Hyperlane, both you and your users will be eligible to receive Expansion Rewards - distributed proportionally to your protocol usage. The more activity your app generates for Hyperlane, the more Expansion Rewards you will be eligible to receive.

By default, 85% of Expansion rewards will be distributed to your end-users and the remaining 15% to you - though you can customize this split to engage, retain, and incentivize your users however you see best fit. You may want to pass on your HYPER to your power users, or set up a referral program to drive application growth. Or maybe you’ll want to swap your HYPER to incentivize activity specific to your app or ecosystem. Expansion Rewards reward protocol activity on Hyperlane - how you use them is up to you.

The Chain Deployer

The stewards of the ecosystems throughout Expansion.

Who you are: You are running, or planning to launch, a chain that uses Hyperlane for interoperability. Whether its a general-purpose L1, rollup, or app-chain, your chain uses Hyperlane as a gateway for onboarding new users and applications, and connecting to the rest of the multichain landscape.

What HYPER means for you: If your chain uses Hyperlane, you help contribute to Hyperlane’s adoption as the open standard for interoperability, and your users may be eligible to receive Expansion Rewards, allowing you to incentivize more users and developers to onboard to your chain using HYPER. What’s more, if Hyperlane was the canonical, or primary bridge for your ecosystem, your users will be eligible to receive up to 25% in boosted Expansion Rewards.

The Asset Issuer

The crafty astronaut issuing assets that flow freely across Expansion.

Who you are: You manage the minting and distribution of an asset that you want to be accessible across multiple chains. Whether it’s a stablecoin, liquid staking token, or any other multichain asset - you rely on Hyperlane to facilitate distribution of your asset and manage crosschain interactions with your end-users.

What HYPER means for you: Similar to app developers, if your asset generated messaging volume for Hyperlane in its early days, you’re likely eligible for the Expansion Drop. And with Expansion Rewards, you will be eligible to receive future HYPER distributions, relative to your protocol usage. Whether you want to subsidize minting or bridging fees for your users, incorporate minting incentives, or incentivize non-bridging activity altogether - how you use your Expansion Rewards is up to you.

The Validator

The guardian astronauts securing Expansion.

Who you are: You run a Validator that verifies messages for one of Hyperlane’s default ISMs. Your role is critical to keeping the Hyperlane protocol safe and secure for its users.

What HYPER means for you: If you’re eligible, you will periodically receive Validator Rewards in the form of stHYPER, the liquid staked version of the HYPER token. These rewards are intended to incentivize operators like yourself to continue securing Hyperlane over time and be rewarded for your valuable contributions to the economic security of the Hyperlane protocol.

The Staker

The astronauts who keep Expansion running and support the guardians .

Who you are: You are someone who supports the Validators securing Hyperlane. By staking your HYPER in exchange for stHYPER, you help provide economic security that keeps Hyperlane secure and resilient over time.

What HYPER means for you: In return for staking your HYPER and helping secure Hyperlane, you are eligible to receive staking rewards, distributed on a monthly basis in the form of stHYPER.

Additionally, if you use Hyperlane actively, your staking (stHYPER) position can unlock bonus Expansion Rewards for you with HyperStreaks, as explained here. The longer you continously hold stHYPER, the more Expansion Rewards you’ll be eligible for.

In short, if you stake HYPER you’re eligible to receive staking rewards. If you stake HYPER and use Hyperlane on a regular basis, you can be eligible for both staking rewards AND bonus Expansion Rewards.

Join Expansion

Hyperlane would not be where it is today without its early users, builders, and contributors. To give back to the pioneers of Expansion, retroactive rewards will be distributed in HYPER as part of the Expansion Drop, based on messaging activity generated for the Hyperlane protocol.

  • Learn more about HYPER here.

Even if you weren’t an early user, builder, or contributor, it’s never too late to join Expansion. Expansion Rewards are ongoing, so simply use, build with, and contribute to Hyperlane to be eligible for future distributions.

About Hyperlane

Hyperlane is an open framework for interoperability. It is the toolkit empowering developers to connect any chain and build applications that can easily and securely communicate between multiple blockchains.
