Introducing the Hyperlane Restaking Vaults! Hyperlane is now live with Symbiotic, unlocking economic security for cross chain Hyperlane messages.

Hyperlane Restaking Vaults

The first Hyperlane Restaking Vaults are now live on Symbiotic! Vault deposits will be allocated towards securing cross-chain Hyperlane messages, the first step in bringing economic security to Hyperlane.

Currently, the ETH and BTC vaults from Renzo, Swell, MEV Capital, Gauntlet, EtherFi, P2P, and RE7 are live with conservative limits. Over time, more vaults and assets will be introduced across the Hyperlane ecosystem.

How Does It Work?

Symbiotic is a permissionless restaking protocol that allows assets to be restaked to secure multiple protocols at once. Restaking is designed to enhance capital efficiency for stakers while simplifying access to economic security for protocols like Hyperlane.

On Symbiotic, stakers deposit assets into curated Vaults and receive liquid restaking tokens (LRTs) in exchange, representing their position. Stakers can use their LRTs across DeFi, while the staked assets are delegated to secure networks like Hyperlane on Symbiotic.

Through Symbiotic, a validator set will then be selected for each chain Hyperlane supports. Selected validators will be enrolled into Hyperlane’s default ISMs, becoming a core component of Hyperlane’s security layer. Assets deposited into the Hyperlane Restaking Vaults will be delegated towards rewarding selected validators moving forward, and stakers will receive rewards as these selected validators secure cross-chain Hyperlane messages.

The End Game: Restaked Interoperability

The Hyperlane Restaking Vaults bring up a significant milestone in cross-chain security: Restaked Interoperability. The key principle behind Restaked Interoperability is that cross-chain messages are economically secured by restaked assets, like the ones deposited into the Hyperlane Vaults. This design enhances cross-chain security by enforcing economic penalties against misbehavior by agents securing cross-chain activity.

So where does this fit in to Hyperlane?

Hyperlane’s modular security architecture uses agents called validators to observe and sign messages on an origin chain, or the chain where the message is sent from. This is critical to ensure any messages that are received on the destination chain are authentic and trustworthy.

If a validator misbehaves, such as signing a message that did not occur on the origin chain, it is committing fraud and faces a penalty. With Restaked Interoperability, validators who misbehave are penalized financially, as the share of stake that’s allocated towards them from the Hyperlane Restaking Vaults gets cut or slashed. As a primitive this can be extended in several ways, and protocol designers will continue to pursue innovative architectures that further enhance security.

With Restaked Interoperability, users can send messages through Hyperlane knowing that there is a direct financial incentive for the protocol to securely deliver their message.

Why Build With Symbiotic?

Symbiotic’s design fits very well with Hyperlane’s modular security architecture, and can be extended in ways that align with the needs of Hyperlane users. Not only that, Symbiotic has established itself as a leading restaking platform today. More specifically, the protocol offers several key advantages for an open interop framework like Hyperlane:

  • Customizability: Symbiotic’s modular architecture allows for networks to customize their own vault parameters. From deposits and withdrawals to staking parameters, slashing conditions, and operator selections, Hyperlane core contributors were able to configure these parameters to Hyperlane’s specific needs.
  • Flexibility: Symbiotic is designed to support a variety of chains and asset types for restaking. This flexible nature makes it adaptable to different ecosystems, an important criteria as Hyperlane continues expanding across 130+ chains today.
  • Scalability: With Symbiotic, Hyperlane can easily create new restaking Vaults as needed, scaling their Restaked Interoperability with ease.

What’s Next?

The Hyperlane Restaking Vaults are the first step to bringing economic security to Hyperlane. Today, any chain or application can permissionlessly connect to other chains and VMs with fast & affordable bridging through Hyperlane. Soon, they’ll be able to leverage economic security for securing their cross-chain messages.

More about Hyperlane

Hyperlane is the open interoperability framework. It empowers developers to connect anywhere onchain and build applications that can easily and securely communicate between multiple blockchains. Importantly, Hyperlane is fully open-source and always permissionless to build with.
